Testament Tuesday – In the Nest

The other morning I heard this odd rattling sound on our front door. I opened it up only to discover that birds had been trying to take twigs off of my wreath to build their nests! This went on for several days as the birds would return to see if there was more materials, they could add to make their nests perfect and it got me to thinking. These birds spend so much time meticulously finding the perfect materials for their nests, working tirelessly on them and in an instant they can be blown away by wind or rain. Everything they’ve worked for gone in an instant. Imagine the panic they feel when that happens!

Haven’t we felt this panic? I know I have, and maybe you do right now. Maybe you’ve worked so hard, you were so close, and then it was all gone. And now you’re left wondering what you’re going to do and how things will ever be okay again. It’s times like this we need to look back into our past and see that we’ve survived EVERYTHING to this point, so why would that change now? We’ve made it through every single thing that has ever happened to us. And it was all God getting us through it. It was God’s provision, His blessing, and His divine work.

It’s time we let God’s provision bring us peace. He has proven time and time again that His faithfulness has brought us through everything, and He will carry us through this too.

Think back to the birds and their nests. Once their nest is destroyed, they take no time to start rebuilding a new one. And guess what? Everything they need to rebuild they find. It’s all provided for them. Isn’t the same for us? God’s hand is always at work, providing us with exactly what is needed even when things go wrong.

Matthew 6:26-27 is one of my all-time favorite verses and it says,

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

The birds trust that they’ll always have what they need, even through disasters. And so can we. We are so valuable, we are priceless. Our God will always make a way, so our worrying does nothing for us.

When the birds need food for their babies they go out and search for it. She doesn’t sit in the nest and worry about how hard it’s going to be to find food. Nope, she trusts that when she goes out for food she will bring some back. Daily trust for their daily provision.

God tells us that just like the birds, we can know that we will always be provided for. So why do we worry about what’s to come or what’s happened? Why sit and dwell on what’s lost when God promises us that He will give us exactly what we need?

Each morning we should start our day with asking God to provide us with exactly what we need for the day. He has always been faithful, so why would he stop now? Just as the bird leaves her nest in faith she will find the food needed for the day, so should we. We should get up and do what we need to do and know that He will care for us.

God, give us strength today. Guide us today. Help us to receive your will and we will be faithful with it. Give God your full attention today. No worrying no overwhelm. Focus on what God is doing in and through our lives. Know that whatever comes tomorrow, God has it covered!
